Hello, I'm Damien (they/xyr/voids).
I am a junior illustration major pursuing minors in graphic design & art history at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design. After graduation, I intend to find work that combines my interests as a graphic designer & illustrator. I have also become more & more interested in incorporating printmaking into my art practice, & would like to further explore printmaking classes at MCAD to broaden my skillset.
My illustration work is often quite graphical, & my graphic design work is often quite illustrative. In my artwork, the two disciplines blend together into a singular practice. I primarily work digitally using Procreate or Photoshop, but I also enjoy experimenting with ink, collage, & printmaking forms such as risograph & screenprinting.
I am inspired by propaganda, language, critical theory, & the spaces in which we find ourselves. I am inspired by conceptual artists such as Gordon Matta-Clark, whose exploration of space, of home, of time & memory I find very compelling. I also love William Kentridge’s political lithographs with the way he combines illustration, text, & printmaking techniques, Kaylee Rowena’s both spooky & delightful risographs of haunted houses, & Josh Mayfield’s bold propaganda posters which grab your attention with great typesetting & element composition. I find endless inspiration from indie zines & zine-makers, & I love the look of printed objects. The process of printmaking really interests me, & I am currently learning how to create prints using a range of printmaking methods.
All art is political, but a lot of my art is explicitly politically focused, & I want that art to spur people to action. I want to teach people things, give them things to consider, & get them to move.
